What Do You Need To Bring to Your Tax Appointment?

If you have an appointment with a tax expert, you need to bring all the right documents. That way, you can ensure the meeting is productive for you and the accountant. So, what do you need to bring to your tax appointment? Keep reading to find the answer so you can prepare for your meeting.

Taxpayer Personal Information

You must bring certain personal details to your tax appointment. This doesn’t just apply to you but also to everyone else in your household. Make sure to bring the social security numbers of everyone you are filing with.

In addition, you will need your spouse’s and dependents’ full names and birth dates. Anyone attending the tax appointment will also need proof of identification, bank account numbers, bank routing numbers, and a copy of the previous year’s tax return. If you’ve been issued an identity protection PIN, bring this to the meeting, too.

Important Income Information

You must also bring your W-2 forms to your appointment, but there’s a key detail to remember if you have multiple jobs. Anyone with more than one job must bring W-2s from each job to ensure accurate tax management results.

However, W-2s may not be the only income information you need. For example, anyone whose income included unemployment benefits must have their 1099-G form for their accountant. Likewise, if you received social security, you must bring your SSA-1099 form. If you’re self-employed, you will need a 1099-K form. Simply put, bring any forms that you need to show all the income that you reported for the current year.

Documents for Deductions

When discussing what you need to bring to your tax appointment, we can’t overlook documents for tax deductions. The specific documents you need to bring depend on a few unique factors. For example, you must bring records of charitable donations if you want them deducted from your taxes. Are you attending college? If so, consider if you qualify for Form 1098-T, which shows how much you paid in tuition.

Bring any documents related to deductions you wish to use. If you work with one of our individual tax accountants, you can avoid overlooking any deductions you deserve. Double-check this list before heading to your tax appointment to ensure you’re ready to make the most out of your time with the experts.
